I’m really pissed now so don’t go writing any senseless comments under this article, pretending that you love “made-in-Ghana” more than Kwame Nkrumah, without reading the contents first. Kantaka Automobile unit are lately behaving like spoilt brats and trying to blackmail all of us under the guise of “Ghanaians should support their own”. Someone’s got to tell them that the funfair period is over and that they need to get serious and stop the jokes.
I used to watch the annual exhibitions of Kantanka with pride, glee and awe, but not anymore. At first, it was all about proving “the black man is capable” of making for example: car, TV set, tractors etc. Consequently, Kantanta company will showcase all their latest inventions each year. But there is time for everything; a time to show proof that you can do A B C and a time to actually do what is really useful in the environment you operate. There is a time to make prototypes and there is a time to seriously commercialize things with one aim – make profit. But Kantanka Automobile (I’m not saying the whole Kantanka company) is stuck in the funfair, “showboy”, prototyping and proofing stage to the extent that someone needs to give them a serious jolt to wake them up.
Uber launched in Ghana since June 2016. From a recent development about Uber drivers planned demonstration, some drivers claim there are about 6000 online drivers (drivers for Uber, Taxify and others) in Ghana. Let’s do the math. Let’s assume Kantanka gets just 10% of this 6000. This means they could have sold 600 units of cars by now. In addition, a bird whistled into my ears that one of the brand-new budget options in Ghana has sold about 1500 units of that car for the 2017 model. That’s running into dozens of millions of Ghana cedis. But Kantanka Automobile is busy competing in the luxury SUV range of cars. Even for their least saloon, the K7 starts from GHC65,000 at 1.5 cubic capacity (CC). For the records, the top 3 cars ranked as best for Uber in Ghana have CC of either 0.8 or 1.0. It’s like the guys are not in Ghana when it comes to the marketing side of the business.
I started managing cars on Uber (on the side) since January 2017 with 2 cars. Today, I’ve managed over 70 cars, most of them brand new (tier rubber) and employ 7 admin staff to manage the operations. I know many Ghanaians who are used to buying “home used” cars don’t know that there are brand-new but affordable car options in Ghana which they can buy outright or with convenient arrangement. For example, there are brand new cars from $7,300 – $11,000 right here in Ghana which my team has certified as being part of the top best cars for Uber in Ghana. In the long run, brand new car options give far better return on investment than the used options.
My question to you Kantanka: what at all is preventing you from making or assembling budget cars specifically for Uber in Ghana? Why are you headstrong on producing luxury cars when Uber has given you a golden opportunity mass-produce budget cars and arrange with financial institutions so that many Ghanaians could buy and use for Uber? Why can’t you make a car that has MSRP of $7,000 to $9,000? Why are you becoming like a nagging wife, whining into our ears and literally crying “Why Can’t Ghanaians Support Their Own?”. Why can’t Kantanka rather support the demands of Ghanaians by producing budget cars? Why why why? Please get serious! I love Ghana and I love Kantanka’s pioneering spirit. But don’t blackmail us. You will lose your mojo by taking this path.
Please don’t try contacting me because I’m still upset like hell. You left us at the mercy of unreliable, over aged (8-12 years used) cars for Uber. You left us at the whims and caprices of some car dealers who decided to quickly increase prices of these brand-new budget cars once they realized demand was rapidly increasing. Just go and sin no more.
